Information for Walkers
Superb coastal scenery

Our location: We are at the most southerly point in Devon, the southern tip of an officially recognised National Landscape, home of the rare cirl bunting.
The section of the South West Coast Path between Torcross and East Portlemouth opposite Salcombe, past Start Point and Prawle Point, is particularly splendid and attracts many walkers who pass close to our watchstation.
All are welcome to our Visitor Centre. You are also welcome to visit the duty watchkeepers in the lookout provided they are not dealing with an emergency at the time.
Weather information

Before setting out for a day’s walk along the coast you are welcome to telephone the Lookout on 01548 511259 for the current weather at Prawle Point.
Or of course you can access our Weather Station for live weather information.
South West Coast Path Passport

Just call in at the Lookout and we’ll gladly stamp your SWCP passport.
We can supply you with a passport to record your journey along the coast path for just £7.
Our Visitor Centre

Our Visitor Centre is full of interesting information about the wildlife, geology and history of this magnificent and sometimes dangerous stretch of coast. You’ll also find information about our Lookout and the local search and rescue services.
If the weather turns bad you are welcome to shelter inside and if you or your dog are thirsty we can provide water (free for the dog! Bottled water is on sale in the lookout).
Help in an emergency

As of December 2024 only the EE network provides any reliable mobile phone coverage along this stretch of the SW Coast Path – and very little west of the Lookout.
If you find yourself in difficulty and without a phone signal and are nearby, consider sending one of your party up to the Lookout. We can then notify and liaise with the appropriate emergency services to get you help.
The Lookout is equipped with an automated external defibrillator and a basic first aid kit for use by you, if needed.
The Lookout is manned 365 days a year from 0900 to 1700 and 0900 to 2000 in the summer months (or sunset if it is earlier).
