Duties of the watchkeepers

Eyes along the coast

Watchkeepers at work

Restoring a visual watch along the coast quickly caught on and today the station has a team of around 60 fully trained volunteers keeping watch during most daylight hours 365 days a year.

The station relies on voluntary donations for maintaining and equipping the lookout with high powered telescopes, weather instruments, radio, radar and up to date charts.

A part of the search and rescue team

Watchkeepers work closely with the Marine and Coastguard Agency (MCA) which co-ordinates all search and rescue operations and all vulnerable situations visible from the lookout are carefully monitored.

In the spring of year 2000, the station was awarded Declared Facility Status by MCA enabling NCI Prawle Point to become a part of the Search and Rescue organisation.
